Winter's Last Gasp

archibald_120X90_text.jpg

Hmmmm…. Let’s see now… There is a blizzard warning in effect for northeastern Wisconsin, the Upper and north central region of Michigan. Interesting. Winds will be gusting to 50 mph in the area with near zero visibility – blowing and drifting snow will accompany this development. That certainly qualifies as a serious active weather event.

There’s also heavy snow in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday for Maine and northern New Hampshire…It’s technically spring but winter has a knack for hanging around…making an unexpected curtain call so-to-speak.

But then again, is it that unusual for the Upper Midwest, Central Plains, Great Lakes and New England states to see this kind of weather at this time of the year? No, not really. In fact, there have been snowfall events that have taken place in late spring and early summer even… the later are rare but keep in mind that weather has a lot to do with timing and circumstance. If all the ingredients are in place – anything can happen at anytime, in theory of course.

The unfortunate situation that has been setup with all of this cold air descending across the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley – even stretching down south toward Tennessee, is the freezing conditions which could, if prolonged, could damage seed planting, spring blossoms, and crops. Ah, winter… The Old Man… has an extended agenda this year.

ahhhh! I'm so tired of winter. Please come soon, spring!

I think the Old man is punishing us, for a number of reasons.

I agree Willie... and we have no choice but to wait it out... I'm pulling for spring too!

Hang in there my friend!

Is global warming causing us to stay in the deep freeze? Is global warming causing all this sub zero wind chill's? I thought global warming was warming the earth? I haven't seen a warm day since last year..

Good questions Greg - it's very complicated to say the least...one thing is for sure....weather patterns are always in flux. The 4 natural seasons are proof of that. Hey, sometimes winter hangs on a little longer than expected...that's completely within the realm of possibitlity without it being an extreme event...Yes, there have been record temperatures set this last week - record lows in places that "shouldn't" be getting that cold - like Waco Texas - 32 degrees F on April 7th and 3.4 inches of snow to boot. However, let's alos look at the marco climate scale...have the global temperatures over the course of a year long duration increased - over the last 3 decades...the answer is yes... is this a sign of global warming...some would say definitely so... I say, look at the data and the arguments from meteorologists, climatologists, atmospheric scientists and then some for a better perspective...the answer to the uestion lies in the true recognition of what our responsibility as human beings is with respect to how we manage what we do to our planet, what we have done, and we will continue to do to our home in terms of the environment.

Gary

I am so sick of winter when is it ever going to end?.
