The song might have been Compared To What by Les McAnn from a record called Swiss Movement...Les McAnn and Eddie Harris live in Montreaux...

I loved the movie I went on opening night when it hit South Florida and I was very pleased. Taraji and Don were great and I know that there will never be another movie like this one. Can't wait till it makes it to DVD.

I would think people like:

Indie.Arie
Anita Baker
Brand New Heavies
Dumpstaphunk
Anthony Hamilton
Gerald Levert
Jill Scott

Retro artists, basically.

Vanessa:
The song that was played after the assassination was
Sam Cook's "A Change is Gonna Come".
Does anyone know the instrumental piece that Petey played after his second time starting at the station? It's from the early 70's.

from Arron M. | July 29, 2007 11:44 AM

The movie was one of the better movies of the year by far, and should be shown everywhere so everyone can enjoy this movie, very well cast, great acting, very funny, and Petey kept it real.

from Brenda B. | July 29, 2007 11:40 AM

This movie was excellent, I live in the D.C. area and thoroughly enjoyed it. What ashame it isn't being shown in other areas.

from ron harris | July 28, 2007 04:20 PM

I know Petey would love the songs of the late 50's, 60's and 70's. On his TV show, Petey Greene's Washington, he would have people dancing like we danced in DC. They call it hand dancing now, but, at that time,we just danced.

does anyone know the song that Petey puts on after he tells the city that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated?

from Vanessa | July 27, 2007 09:26 AM

I'm so disappointed, this movies is only playing in one theather in New Jersey, which is outrageous (Voohrees) where is that? I can not believe that this movie is not obtainable.

from Carole Eady | July 26, 2007 06:51 PM

Please tell who played the instrumental song "Outasight" that is featured in Talk to Me? It is a song from 1972 or 1973. I think Petey was dancing to it with Vernell in the movie, or he played it as the DJ.

I am so happy to see "Talk To Me" opening in Sacramento, Ca. on July 27. I definitely plan to attend with "my friend" and plan to encourage other friends, my children, and other family members to attend. This is such an inspirational story!. The promos are hilarious!!! Of course, I love every movie in which Cheadle has performed. I still think he should have received the Academy Award for best supporting actor in his role as Mouse in "Devil in A Blue Dress. "

from Brenda Hill | July 24, 2007 11:31 PM

I'm constantly hearing positive remarks about "Talk to Me". Unfortunately, I live in an area that is not showing the movie (San Diego,CA). Is there a reason as to why our city is not showing the movie? Who makes that decision? How can black people support good movies if we can't see them. I would be more than happy to complain. I need to know who or what party is behind the scenes making decisions on my behalf.

from AfrikahVenus | July 23, 2007 11:22 AM

Petey would listen to the original old school artis, and sprinkle some neosoul in like SADE, BADU, ANGIE STONE, COMMON, MOS DEF, JILL SCOTT, INDIA ARIE, FLOTERY...ETC. These artis have a message in their music and they keep it real with TRUTH!

Petey loved the Sam Cooke Otis Redding type of music. Music you feel in your SOUL.

To date I have not seen the movie.I currently live in the Atlanta area by way of Wash,D.C.,my hometown. My only regret is that it appears that none of the characters are from D.C.,to play themselves.I guess I am biased. Most importantly, its great that this brother found a way to channel his negative lifestyle with a vision to help those who faced similar circumstances of learned hopelessness, through words of wisdom and positive reflection. Along with Marion Barry,Petey Greene will always be the voice of hope in the "hood" of D.C.

from Mariejo | July 21, 2007 01:27 PM

Loved it. Why? The entire cast was terrific!! Not a bad performance to be found. The first half in particular was a riot. Sorry that it was not released widely so that everyone can see it. That is a great disservice to anyone who wants to see a really great movie.

I find it very disturbing a movie of this nature is not showing in San Jose Ca.
wich is very diverse city. Talk To Me.

I am the neice of Petey Greene,my Mom is his sister. I am so glad a movie and book was made about his life. the bok is call Laugh if you like ani't a Damn thing Funny by Luma Rackley, Everyone should read it.

from LeAnn Rose | July 18, 2007 04:15 PM

It seems that there is alot of places this movie is not being shown. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana and its not playing anywhere here. I would like to see it.

"Our movie"..."Black movie"... you're doing Petey and this movie a huge disservice by labeling it as such. By doing so you eliminate people who should see this movie. White folks won't go if they think it's just a "black movie". You want the word to get out that this is a movie to see because of a great man and what he did for his community which happened to be Affrican American. I wondered when I went to see it if we would be the token white couple in the theater, but I was pleasently suprised when we weren't. Great acting from the entire cast.

Why was this movie only on limited release? Ever since I heard about it I've been planning on seeing it, only to find out that not one theatre in the Tampa Bay Area had picked it up. This is the case with many black movies in this area. Pride was only here for two days. I get sick of having to wait for our movies to come out on DVD before I see them. Okay, so you can tell I'm really annoyed. Somebody, Talk to me and tell me what can be done....

from Jim Steeley | July 15, 2007 04:44 PM

Deborah, its a limited release. It only played in 33 theatres this weekend. It's going to be a wide release in a few weeks. I'm sure it will be in your area soon...

from Deborah Woodley | July 15, 2007 04:33 PM

This movie was advertised on our TV over the last two weeks. When it came out on this past Friday, July 13th, the movie was no where to be found. The Fort Lewis, WA Ranger paper did a big write about the movie. This is not the first time that a black movie was not played in the State of WA on the release date as scheduled. Regal Theather or someone else who has authority in sabotaging the Movie Industry has to be stopped. What can be done? What can concern citizens do? Is this legal? I am tired ot this happening when a black movie comes out. I know this movie would have done better the most movies this weekend, ie, Harry Potter! I wanted to see this movie now! I wanted to influence the first weekend rating! This movie is not palynig in Oregon or Washington State! Some body, please get envolve, this is deinitely a raciest act!
What is going on? What can be done.
We are irate about this unfortunate raciest act of the black movie industry. How can we have our own?

I first heard about the movie from Tavis Smiley nightly broadcast. He strongly suggested people go see this movie. I immediately decided to find the location of where the film was playing in the Bay Area. I drove to San Francisco, from the peninsula and had a great time learning about a man who learned to turn his negative energy into positive energy and be a voice for the people of his community. I am so inspired by his courage, intelligence, tenacity, and deteremination to succeed and pole vault over the negative comments his patrol officier deliberately expressed to him to extinquish his desire to penetrate the wall of prejudice and succeed as a winner. Thank God......God turned his patrol officier's words into fire of determination to serve the people. He began to use his head to connect to his center of greatness.

After working all week I just wanted to go out with the wife and check out a movie . was very sad to fine out the movie was not playing in my area .........

It is a beautiful Saturday afternoon on (July 14th) and my husband and I want to go to the movies to see "Talk To Me". Unfortunately, we live in Delaware (USA) 19702 and the movie is not playing here. I have called Focus Features' New York and California offices today (with no success) to find nearest theater to me. In the future, would you please list on your website the theaters and/or cities showing your movies when you have "selected cities" distribution? Delaware is seldom selected. (Thank God for my New York Times subscription!) At least I could read A.O. Scott's wonderful review in yesterday's paper.

from Desmond | July 14, 2007 11:45 AM

He'd probably still be listening to the same bands and tellin it like it is...that music just ain't the same

from Anonymous | July 14, 2007 11:45 AM

I think Petey would dig some of the R&B artists out there and some of funky hip-hop also. I think he'd love Nas, Jurassic Five and he'd even have a soft spot for Justin Timberlake.
