Filming an Episode

It takes eight days to prep an episode with a director (casting, choosing locations) and eight days to shoot (unless a big show and then it could go nine or ten days). We work very closely with the director to make sure we have great performances and camera movement and a terrific cast of guests. We usually shoot 3 or 4 days on our set in New Jersey, which is the Squadroom, and the reamining days in New York City. We love shooting in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan -- it makes the show real and gritty. Sometimes we shoot two shows at once, usually that's an Ice-T show for one of them; or one for Chris and one for Mariska.

COMMENTS

Long time SVU fan, first time poster.

Shooting within just 8 days per episode? That sounds intense. How many hours per day? I've been on sets before and shoots seem to run between 12 and 16 hours a day.

TO Take care of her new baby. It's not unheard of to take a leave to be with your new child.

I just want to say that it is not only the actors who make the show great....it is also the writers and the producers....So from all of us...Thank you! You all do a wonderful job!

Dude... her long hair was weave. And the episode she just shot was NOT shot after the Emmy's. Come on, use your brain.

Tonite's episode was filmed earlier this year. She hadn't started showing that much yet, but she was still pregnant.

WHY would Mariska be leaving the show!? Blasphemy

Posted by AddictedtoSVU September 20, 2006

Fascinating. Thank you for all the information you've provided us with tonight, however vague (absense makes the heart grow fonder... ahhh!). :-) Can't wait to see how the season unfolds.

Princess - do you not follow along. Mariska is not leaving. The shows you are seeing now are the ones taped while she was on maternity leave. She will be back.

do the folks from CI and SVU associate?

I think they shot that epi pre-August. I couldn't tell too much though, but she still had her baby weight. She looked amazing at the Emmy's and I think slimmer than she was in the epi tonight

Chelsea: true and gritty

I can tell you as an actor, filming is such a high, but there is quite a bit of waiting while cameras set up.

If i'm coming to new york next month, is there any way to find out where or if svu will be shooting in the city during that time?

Do you have much trouble with fans when you film outside?

Posted by svuwannabe September 20, 2006

Wow! I can only imagine what it takes to put together a show like this! Maybe one day I will be able to experience it myself. But in the meantime, I think I will stick to watching Mariska and Chris!
