Bring Your Own Bag

tote-istock4309392.jpgYou've heard the news - paper bags use up trees and plastic ones require landfills. Bring my own reusable bag? You bet that's a good idea. Actually establishing new BYOB habit? Um...well...

Like any nerd worth her salt, I tend to carry a backpack wherever I go. It's a decidedly practical accessory, made all the more necessary because I travel on foot most of the time, with laptop and book-club tomes in tow. And although it's scores me zero style points at after-work cocktail parties, I can't seem to do without it. So the bag I fill up with groceries comes with me automatically... well, one of the bags, since I usually need more than one. When Whole Foods started making its reusable green logo bags, I immediately bought a few. They were on the cumbersome side, however, so I didn't pack them the next time, and instead bought a new one...and later another one. Argh - kind of not the point!

For me, the solution was this: fashionable, foldable bags from companies like Envirosax that are lightweight and small enough to carry around in your handbag or murse (or nerdy backpack) and strong enough to handle all the wine and bulk chocolate a person needs in a week - plus, it works as a carry-all for everything else you buy, from dime store to drugstore to department store. Phase II of operation BYOB in progress.

Very good idea! I must get one or reuse the plastic ones.

haha! That's just like me-I have 10 reusable shopping bags. I couldn't stop buying them...but at least I'm helping. :)
