Your Own Private Microclimate
Hi there.
So I was walking down the street in New York City the other day and I spotted someone wearing a t-shirt.
Now, I know the Northeast had been seeing above-average temperatures this winter, but let me be clear this was no spring day. It was in the low 50s and chilly.
However, the weather didn't seem to faze that man. Did he forget his jacket? Was he just showing off?
We all know Willard likes to flaunt his bod. He's been known to walk around Washington in a Speedo, but I doubt you'll see him out on the Plaza sporting a short-sleeve shirt in February.
It was as if this guy had his own private microclimate.
And it's not just him.
Everywhere you go there seems to be a handful of people who just aren't bothered by the temperatures. I'm sure even you knew someone back in school who wore shorts in the winter.
It's true that everyone feels temperature differently. For instance, the more physically active you are the higher your metabolism is and the more body heat you produce. That'll keep you warmer than others.
Scientifically, it seems women are often colder than men. I'm sure there are any number of jokes to be inserted here, but as a married guy, I'm not going there.
What I do know is that we've all got warm blood running through us.
There is one myth that I do wanna lay to rest. My mom told me, your mom told you, "Bundle up...you'll catch your death of cold!!" Sorry, Mom. Not true. Colds come from germs an bacteria passed between people, not the outside temperature. However, you can get hypothermia, frostbite and a host of other symptoms ... so don't try to be too tough!
