It's So Easy Being Green!

Hey, folks. It's a new year, and at least for some of us, 2007 comes with resolutions. You know the usual ones: eat better, exercise more, carve out more time for family. But here's one that's easy to keep and helps everyone: taking better care of the environment.

I know, I know -- it sounds tough. But there are many small things you can do that not only reduce your environmental impact but that can actually save you time!

Here's an easy switch: cut back on using paper by sending out electronic holiday cards next year. Electronic greetings not only save power and paper, they will also save you money.

Ever heard of 'grasscycling'? Next time you mow your lawn (which could be soon, given the mild winter many states are enjoying!), don't use a bag to collect the grass clippings. Instead, leave the mown grass on your lawn, where it will provide mulch and nutrients and will also save water. Your existing mower may already have a kit included to turn it into a mulching mower. Mulching mowers cut and recut grass into tiny bits that drop down into the soil.

Another way to be green while saving time is to landscape with plants that don't need much water. Drought-tolerant plants not only save water, they tend to grow more slowly, reducing time spent on maintenance. And the next time your area is in drought-mode, you won't need to worry about your garden.

Oh, and have you heard? Recycling is good for the environment! Seriously, though, recycling is a simple and effective way to take care of our planet. Not sure what to recycle and where you can take various items (batteries, cell phones, paint products, etc.)? Log onto earth911.org to get information on recycling programs in your neck of the woods.
