Calm Before the Storm
Do you think the Celtics are going to beat the Lakers and win it all? I don't, but we'll soon find out if the Celtics are finally going to get an opponent worthy of pulling them back to that place they were when they were blistering teams without a full effort in the regular season. My prediction is Lakers in 6, but don't forget that the Celtics have the home court in this one. I really don't have a preference either way at this point. The Celtics annoyed me in the playoffs as I watched KG pass up wide open five-footers and Ray Allen shoot like a rookie deer in headlights, while there's always Kobe's past to keep many of us from making a full emotional investment in the Lakers. I would just like to see some great games, a great series and a couple fouls like this one.
Michael Beasley is 6-8 instead of 6-10, but don't be fooled into thinking that fact will have any impact of where he is drafted. He should be going No. 1 or 2, and should end up being an NBA superstar.
Flip Saunders is out and Michael Curry is reportedly in, yet the Pistons have asked for permission to talk to Mike Woodson. The Hawks are probably hoping the Pistons are going to shock the world and make Woody an offer, but I don't think that's likely. I'd like to think Woody deserves a chance to finish what he started in Atlanta, but the truth is no one, and I mean no one, knows if he's going to see his contract extended or not.
I somehow forgot Elton Brand in my Top 24 list, but it shouldn't be surprising, as I started that thing in May and we still haven't even put the finishing touches on this season yet. If I had a do-over, I'd probably slot EB somewhere between No. 10 and 15 and bump Manu Ginobili off the list. I've got Manu listed at No. 20 and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm just not a big Manu guy and am not sure I'd take him if I had the 20th pick if I was drafting right now. So obviously, I've got some work to do before posting an update to that column. Maybe I'll wait until this season is actually over before trying to figure out what we're going to do in October and November.
Tuesday night's Braves game was fantastic...Nice comeback win, tight game all the way, plenty of foul balls landing close by and my daughter got her grill pasted on the jumbotron. I also walked out of the field entrance and into the concourse to find Gregg Rosenthal's Fantasy Fix show and the Rotoworld name and logo plastered all over a television screen in the stadium. That was kind of weird and cool. I thought about going back on Wednesday, but it was about 100 degrees in the stands, John Smoltz is done for the year and probably his career, and they lost. I think I made the right call by watching it here in the air conditioning, as I found things much less depressing.
Here is a random list of the "Top 25 Alt Rock Bands of the 90s." I'm not sure I'd have the same order as the guys does, but mine would include most of the same bands. In fact, I may try to put together my own list here in the next few days.
Lastly, in my last column I posted a link to a girl going off on an elderly woman on the MARTA train here in Atlanta, which is how we got to the game last night. The video is a little disturbing and the girl obviously has some issues. But then some genius decided to put her rantings to music and came up with this gem. You have to admit, it's pretty catchy. "Where my doo-rag at?"
