Big Day for Dr. A
You guys know how I love to throw the rock and roll names around in my columns. I've been accused of name dropping, and I plead guilty as charged. But I have somehow become pretty tight with some big names in the indie rock world, and like to give my boys some hype. As a result, I've got Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses, Bo Koster from My Morning Jacket and Mark Smith from Explosions in the Sky all signed up for the Rock and Roll Fantasy Hoops League I'm running this year (along with several others). But this little snippet from an interview with Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) made my day.
In a March interview with Cin Weekly on Cincinnati.com, Malkmus, a guy I've never met, threw this tidbit out there.
Q: I thought you were more of a basketball guy.
SM: In our band we have this NBA fantasy league. Joanna (Bolme) and Janet have the best teams.
Q: Is it luck, or do they know what they're doing?
SM: They know what they're doing. We're kind of big fans of (fantasy-sports Web site) Rotoworld and this guy Steve Alexander. It's very geeky. Janet (Weiss) and I follow his advice generally. If you read that you can't go too wrong.
Needless to say, as Pavement is one of my all-time faves, seeing that made my week, and probably my year. Here's the whole interview, if you're interested. Now I just have to get him, Janet and Joanna to commit to the league. Malkmus only wants to play if it's "hardcore," so I'm working on getting people who are into hoops, and not just playing because of their name. We'll see how that goes.
